Creating Ritual

Ritual has been one of the interesting concepts that has translated across my life from my upbringing within a structured Christian religion to the spirituality and autonomy that I currently practice now. When thinking of this concept of ritual, it’s a deeply nourishing modality for me. I have distinct and found memories of growing up within a community linked through religion. There was intentional meaning behind every act’ baking bread, cookies were formed in distinct shapes, the way we held our hands and bodies had meaning as well. Actions were venerable acts, and it was inspiring. While I no longer believe the intricacies of that religion, ritual was one of the key items that became ingrained in my soul.

In 2021 I had a family member pass, and although there were still concerns about the pandemic we gathered as a community and I was re-introduced to the rituals of funeral. Even though the rituals were performed in a religious context, I saw past that and felt deeply moved by the joining of individuals from the community in remembrance. I started to question a bit about the validity of my path, because I missed the reverence of ritual… then I realized ritual can be created in multiple forms and outside of the four walls and cathedral domed-ceiling of a church. Rituals can be meditation in the morning, having a cup of matcha or cacao, moving the body through dance or yoga, OR even reading before bed. Ritual is both small and large within our lives, and we get to decide which moments gain this extra attention.

Some of the larger “rituals” I am accustomed to and have implemented are for Aphrodite, as she gives a beautiful map of how to have rituals. She has specific days of reverence - Fridays weekly, and specific dates each year - and instead of a sermon I get to go within and meet her within myself. My ritual is channeling her energy and gifting her myself as a vessel. This sounds woo-woo, I am very aware. But this ritual of offering myself, calling in my goddess, and allowing her to work through me is not indifferent to the ancient saints and prophets within a Christianized context. Ritual can exist within the spiritual space, and by creating additional opportunities for it to exist it allows others to learn and take away what they need from it as well.

Funeral rites translated into sensual ritual for me… what will transform for you?
