Introduction to: Beginner Friendly Spells
Some of the first spells and rituals a beginner should dip their toe into first are cleansing and protection. Although it may be enticing and appealing to dive into an attraction or love spell, it’s paramount to protect yourself from energy before calling additional in. Within the craft, there is a phenomena of the mati, an evil eye, dark stain or curse when the practitioner isn’t prepared. An essential piece to all spell casting is to ground before the spell work begins, this is to protect the practitioner from drawing unintentional energy into the space. That unintentional energy can easily manipulate and corrupt an innocent spell into something malicious. No one wants to have a love or attraction spell into a repulsion spell.
How does one cast a protection or cleansing spell? What are they? How are they different?
We’ll start with the key differences between the two and how they work in tandem for the caster’s safety. Cleansing is a way to remove impurities in your energetic field and the environment around you, and Protection wards off those energies from returning and then interfering with your intentions. You cannot protect without cleansing, or else the practice will not work; and respectively, if you cleanse and not protect yourself then you will have to cleanse much more frequently.
Cleansing is step number one when you start to layer on protection and before you start complex spell work. I would also say that cleansing your space, even if you don’t identify as a witch/ wiccan/ priest(ess)/etc., should be a vital step in protecting yourself as an energetic being. This is especially true for those who identify as an intuitive, empath or highly sensitive person. Some of my preferred mediums for cleansing are through the use of palo santo, sage, smudging sticks, incense, and water charged by crystals or the full moon. The way I do it is also pretty uniform, with the exception of charged water. I will waft the smoke to all corners of my home while repeating mantras that reinforce the intention; my most used mantra being So Hum - I am. The way I use charged water is by dabbing the water on my chakras and along my central meridian.
Protection uses some of the same techniques - smudging and smoke are very versatile tools to keep in your tool box. Other methods I recommend are sigil carved candles (either bought or done by you); placing salt at your entry-ways (if you can trust that pets or children won’t consume it); and using cinnamon in multiple ways like tying several sticks together to hang on your door, laying sticks along your window wills, and my most favorite is using it in baking.
