Introduction to Crystals at Home
Crystals are my favorite thing to collect and hoard. I started my crystal journey in late 2019 through purchasing items online, in live sales, and through local shops. I believe that they are a helpful tool to balance the energies within our bodies and our homes. There is a lot of information online about the properties of crystals, their uses, chakras and more so this is a distilled version of the three crystals that I think you should seek out as a beginner.
Rose Quartz: Rose Quartz is a light pink crystal that can be polished or raw (have a rough texture). It comes in many different shapes and sizes, and one of my personal favorites is a chunky, polished piece that’s in the shape of a heart. Rose Quartz is the perfect crystal to attract all types of love: familial, romantic, self-love, etc., because it works with the heart chakra. Although the rule of thumb is that crystals that have the same color as the chakra (green crystals like Fluorite, Aventurine, and Malachite that reflect the heart chakra’s green energetic signature), this pink hued stone works very well with the heart since it has the same love intention. I would recommend placing this crystal in your bedroom or the kitchen to amplify the love already within those spaces.
Black Tourmaline: This is another stone that can be seen in both raw or polished forms, but it can also be seen incorporated into other minerals. The piece I personally own is a Black Tourmaline in Quartz, so it’s a milky white crystal with tourmaline veins throughout. The purpose of this crystal is protection, and is often recommended to place near the front door, entryway or foyer of your home. It can add a layer of protection past traditional security measures. Since it’s a protection stone, it’s also linked with the root chakra. For a smaller piece of this stone, I would recommend carrying it on your person to protect the core part of yourself when you’re out in the world.
Selenite: Selenite is a unique mineral because not only does it work with all chakras within the body, but also is a self-cleansing stone. Most crystals need to be cleansed after using to maintain their efficiency, akin to charging your phone or other electronics. Selenite is a self charging crystal and doesn’t require this, but also can charge and cleanse other crystals around it. Because of this, it can be placed throughout the home and near other crystals. My main recommendation would be to place it in your bedroom on a nightstand or even under your pillow. The only caution I have around this stone is it’s a softer stone that doesn’t have the durability of Tourmaline and Quartz. It can be broken easily, scratched, flaked, and shouldn’t be in or near water. I have had both a sphere and flat crescent moon break (thank you cats), but the form I enjoy the most is a cleansing stick. It’s about the same size as a palo santo and very convenient to have on my person when I’m outside my home, traveling or under my pillow.
